The first stage in the process to stop your dog chewing is to accept that it is natural for him to want to chew – it is their instinct.   It is upto you to train them so they know what they can and can’t chew.

Just like a child, when a dog is teething he needs something to chew.  Buy him some suitable toys so he is not so tempted to have a nibble at your shoe or your furniture – this is a much cheaper option than to let him have free rein and chew whatever he fancies.One of the best ways of training a dog not to chew everything around him, is to keep a small area, where everything around him can be chewed.  He will soon become accustomed to the smell and look of the things that he is allowed to chew, so when he is allowed free access to places where your personal and household items are kept he is much more likely to stick to chewing where he is able to.

Do not make the mistake of giving him things that will confuse him, for instance, if you give him an old shoe of yours, how is he going to know not to chew your brand new shoe?  It will have the same smell and he will think it is ok to chew it, as you have already indicated this by giving him a similar item.

Make sure that if it is a puppy you are trying to train not to chew things he shouldn’t, you have lots of puppy toys for him to chew.  There are many teething products, and toys that have been specifically designed to be ‘chew proof’ on the market, like the Kong products.

It is easier to teach a puppy not to chew, but it is still possible to teach your older dog to stop chewing by using the same techniques.

Until your dog is fully trained not to chew things that are not his to chew, it will be best not to leave him unsupervised, perhaps you could consider a crate for him.
