Dog Crate Training – Is It For You?

Crate training is one of the best things that you can do for your brand new little puppy.   Crate training is often thought to be cruel by certain people, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Dog crate training will actually give a lot of benefits to both you and your dog.   Crate training is not difficult, although people mistakenly think that it is. It comes naturally to a dog not to soil the area where they sleep and eat, and this is one good reason why crate training is important.

You will need to handle the dog crate training with care, and remember that once this has been done properly it really will enhance the lives of both you and your dog.

One of the most important things is to keep a note of when your puppy likes to go to the toilet, when he likes to sleep and when he likes to eat – this will give you a good guide as to the best times for crate training.  Don’t think that this type of training means that you have to keep your dog locked up for a long period, it doesn’t.

As with anything, it will not be perfect straight away, there will be times when your puppy may ‘mess’ in his crate, but he should not be punished for this as it is likely to have only been an accident.

Crate training is one of the better ways to potty training your puppy, so it is best tackling this when they are young so that it doesn’t become an issue as they get older.

As dogs can often seem to dislike their crate when you first start crate training and they may well whine and bark to let you know they are not too happy, don’t give up.  Dogs will eventually come to love their crate as their own personal space.

Short periods of 10 to 15 minutes are best when you start crate training, and these can be slowly build up to about two hours as they become accustomed to it.
