Dog Obedience Schools – Are They A Good Idea?

Within a dog obedience school environment your dog will be trained to respond to your commands and will be introduced to various social elements, and this will help them to adapt to any particular situation you may come across in the future.

Before enrolling your dog in a dog obedience school, it is a good idea to at least start some basic training with him first – this way you will learn your own dogs capabilities and what causes him a problem.

The training covered by a dog obedience school will generally be within three categories.  One will be learning to walk with collar and leash,   one will be training by reward method, and then you will go onto more advanced training methods.

Leash and collar training your dog is perhaps the easiest, and many people feel confident to do this themselves.  The best way is to combine this with reward training, which means every time your dog obeys you, he gets a reward.  You will be surprised at how quickly a dog will learn to walk well on the leash when you are using this method of positive training.  If you decide to go down the route of an obedience dog school, your dog will be trained by a professional and will therefore learn how to walk well and behave when on the leash much quicker so you will have almost immediate results.

A dog obedience school will also help to stop any bad habits your dog may have, like digging, chewing, jumping up etc.

The aim of an obedience school for dogs is to make sure that the dogs have the most basic commands like, sit, stay, heel, and come completely clear and obey them straight away.

Some obedience schools will go into more specialised areas like dog agility training, which can be great for some breeds of dog like a border collie for instance.

The school will also make sure that you know how to further your pet dogs training once the course has finished.

Dog grooming will also be covered, and there will also be a chance to ask questions specific to your dog.

The main things you need to check for when deciding on a dog training school are:

- check they use mild training methods, and have experienced staff.
- ensure that they have adequate training equipment and facilities.
-  they will need to understand dog psychology and have studied dog behavior.
- make sure that the school covers training to the level you require, as well as grooming and nutrition.
- get the costs invovled from the school before you register.
- look at the numbers in each class, making sure there are not too many dogs in each one.
- check that they give you extra training materials to take home with you.

Many people take the view that most dogs can be trained adequately at home, although with certain breeds it can definately be beneficial to look into a dog obedience school.
