3 Most popular dog training techniques

There are endless resources that will teach both owner and pup, some important dog training techniques. From online lessons and courses to in-house dog training specialists, there is no lack of choice for the new dog owner. With that being said, here is a basic rundown of the two most common dog training techniques used by professional and amateur dog trainers alike.Clicker training
Clicker training is referred to as operant conditioning, meaning that it is primarily a “hands-off” and “no force” type of training. This is the form of training used by many small or toy dog owners. The premise is to use the small metal “clicker” to keep the dog aware of his or her actions and obedience. For example, while teaching your dog to follow the command “heal” you would press the clicker any time the dog is close and tight next to you during your walk. The clear sharp click is an easy sound for dogs to hear and they will eventually learn to interpret the sound as a sign of praise that will be followed by a treat. Some dog trainers believe this is a more accurate way to train as it enables your dog to know exactly what he has done correctly and takes the guess work out of your dog’s obedience training.  More information on clicker dog training can be found here

Training with Dog whistles
This dog training technique is usually reserved for the owners of hunting and sporting breeds. These owners usually wish to train their dog to chase or retrieve while in the bush. Most dog whistles produce a sound which is at a high enough frequency that dogs are able to hear it from a distance. At the same time the sound is not loud or sudden and will not scare off any potential game. The trainer or owner of a whistle trained dog will know a number of whistle combinations, all meaning different commands for their dog. For example, three short whistles blown together could be a command for “come” and a long single whistle could alert the dog to “stay” and wait for further commands to retrieve. Whistle dog training techniques are hard to learn and take more than the average amount of commitment from the owner.

Regardless of what type of dog training technique you choose, treat your dog with respect, understand that proper training takes as much commitment on your part as your dog’s, and remember under no circumstances should a dog ever be hurt or physically punished.
