Hunting Dog Training – How Is It Different to Other Training?
We all want our dogs to be well behaved and good mannered, but a hunting dog needs to be trained a step, or even several steps further.
Hunting dog training is a much more involved process than any other type of dog training. The main difference between hunting dogs and your standard family dog is that one is a pet and one is not. While you can choose to have a pet dog that is also a hunting dog, this is not usual, and most people are not happy with the mix – so generally the two types of dogs are not the same.
A hunting dog will need to learn extra and different skills to a pet dog, and although a Hunting dog is not the same as a pet, they still need to be treated with the same kindness and love that a pet dog is, and they will soon learn to respond to you.
Hunting dog training will rely more typically on the dogs’ sense of smell. Owners will hide a variety of objects for the hunting dog to find so that their sense of smell can be tested – this can be made fun for the dog. Another area of hunting dog training that needs to be worked on is their retrieval skills. Again you can make this enjoyable and the dog will soon learn. These are the two skills that need to be used to make a hunting dog functional so that they can do what they need to.
Hunting dogs will be just as eager to please their owners and when you are training them, you will still need to show them they will respond to you.
