Potty Dog Training – Can an Adult Dog Be Potty Trained?
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” as the saying goes, or can you?
Yes, adult dogs can be potty trained, it will just take a lot of patience. It is never too late for potty dog training.
Potty dog training for a puppy is easier, but there is no reason why you can’t train your dog so long as you give him time to learn and progress his actions.
Make sure you keep an eye on your pet and this will ensure that you don’t have too many accidents to clear up. You can always use a leash so that you are restricting his movements whilst the training is taking place.
Here are a few useful tips for potty dog training in the adult dog.
1. Limit the amount of water you give your pet to drink, but make sure you don’t go too far with this causing dehydration.
2. Don’t feed your dog later than about 7 pm as this will help to ensure that he does not need to pass water or defecate while you are asleep.
3. Try and recognise the signs that he wants to urinate and clear his bowels. Typically he will get restless and start to act distracted. Once you know these signs potty training your dog will be easier.
4. Take your pet out for a morning walk and do not play with him till he has ‘performed’.
5. Set up a designated area for him to do his business. Remember to give lots of praise when he does it in the right place. Do not, however, punish your dog if he does it in the wrong place.
Potty dog training will take time, but the reward will be worth all the effort you both put into it. Remember time, patience and commitment and you will get there.
