Puppy leash training; It doesn’t have to be so frustrating!

Congratulations! You’re a new dog owner! Purchasing and raising a puppy can be one of the most rewarding and enjoyable events to happen in a household.

However, with your new puppy comes a lot of responsibility, training and commitment. One of the most challenging aspects to bringing up your new companion can be puppy leash training. Puppies generally are full of energy, curiosity and seem to be oblivious to you and your training regime. However, there are a few steps you can take to make even the shortest walk pleasurable for both of you.
The most important point to remember when first starting your puppy leash training is to start out slowly. As stated above, on his first few walks your dog is going to be completely overwhelmed. Start out with a simple walk to the end of your driveway and back. If you try to go too far on your first walk, all you will achieve is frustration and fatigue. Continue taking your puppy on the same short walk a few times each day, for about a week. Once he feels comfortable with his routine then you can go a few minutes further down the sidewalk or yard. This approach achieves two things. One, your dog is not misbehaving out of excitement, and two, he will become familiar and comfortable with the feeling of being on leash.

Another tip you can use in your puppy leash training is to make sure your dog wears a collar at all times. This is an important point for many reasons. Knowing your dog can be properly identified and returned if he runs away is reassuring and his tags and collar will also inform people of his vaccinations. However, with puppy leash training, wearing a collar at all times will cut down on the level of stress your dog may feel while on leash. If he wears his collar regularly it will not seem unusual to have something around his neck. This can prevent your puppy from pulling at the end of his leash and also from struggling with you while trying to put it on

Puppy leash training is worth the effort. If you start out with short regular walks and make sure to have your puppy wear his collar, you will achieve your training goals quickly and enjoyably. If you would like more tips on training your puppy click here
