Puppy Obedience Training – More Tips
Following on from the previous list of puppy obedience training tips, here are some more that will help to make that your cute little pup turns into a well behaved and obedient dog.
7. When you are calling your puppy, or even just using his name, always make sure you always use a positive tone, for example don’t say “bad FRED” or “No Fred”, as this will cause confusion to your pup, and he will begin to think that when you call his name it is for something bad. You should make sure that your puppy learns to associate his name with nice things like a walk, treats, a hug etc. When this is the case you will find that your pup will come to you more easily and you will be well on the way with your puppy obedience training.
8. Work out a specific puppy training schedule. Your pup will lose interest and get bored if you make your puppy obedience training too long, aim for somewhere around 10 minutes three or four times a day. Try and make his learning fun and have plenty of treats on hand to teach him the basis puppy obedience commands such as “sit”, “down”, “come” etc.
9. Get close to your pup, build a relationship with him – you will both find the lessons much more enjoyable. You need your puppy to look forward to spending time with you, and not to want to avoid you. You should also make sure that you spend time socializing your puppy from an early age. Socialization is a hugely important thing for your pup to understand. He must learn to be around other people, other animals, sounds that may distract him etc.
You can begin the socialization process by slowing introducing him to everyday sounds and activities when he is little. Try taking him out to the park and let him mix with other dogs and children. Let him visit the mall with you so he gets used to outside sounds. Switch on the vacuum when he is in the room, use the garden hose around him. The more things you can introduce your puppy to when he is young the better it will be in the long run.
The basic puppy obedience training includes crate training, house breaking, leash training and food training. Every puppy needs to master these essential skills.
