Puppy Training Problems and How to Overcome them - Part 1

puppy training

When you own a puppy you will almost certainly find that he will exhibit behavior you would rather he didn’t from time to time - two of the most common puppy training issues are how to stop your puppy jumping and how to get your puppy to stop pulling on his leash.  Puppy jumping is covered below and how to stop your puppy pulling on the leash is covered in part 2.

Puppy jumping up - this is a problem with, I think every single puppy in the world.  When a puppy jumps up at you he is showing his enthusiasm and how pleased he is to see you.

When your puppy is young and he jumps up at you, wagging his little tail for all he’s worth, it can be cute - trouble is as he grows into a large, heavy dog it is far from cute.  In some cases having a heavy dog jumping can be dangerous, this is especially true if he jumps up at small children and even some adults.  Some large dogs could easily knock down a toddler, and the very large dogs could knock over some adults.  This really is something that needs to be sorted out as soon as possible.  It is best to sort this out while he is a puppy and is easier to handle.

When he jumps up at you, or anyone else, you need to gently put his paws back onto the floor.  As he remains there then give him plenty of praise.

You need to give your puppy something else that he can do to show his enthusiasm, rather than jumping up.  You could try to have him give you his paw when he greets you.  Another option is to try and pre-empt him jumping by giving him the sit command as soon as you know he is likely to jump.

Give plenty of praise, have lots of his favorite treats to hand, and above all be consistent.  This way you will find that you can easily train your puppy not to jump. For lots more help and advice on how to train your puppy take a look at Dove Cresswell’s Dog Training here
