Stop Puppies Biting

It is a fact that puppies just love to bite - we just need to teach them that it is not really going to be acceptable for them to bite at all.  So how do you stop puppies biting?
As biting comes so naturally to a puppy, it is something that you will need to look at when they are young, as a dog biting can lead to all sorts of complications, not to mention ruined shoes, boots, furniture, toys etc.

A puppy biting does not seem so bad, but transfer that to a full grown dog and a bite will do a lot of damage. This will apply especially if a dog bites a child.   A nip from a puppy can easily draw blood, so you could even find yourself in legal difficulties.  You do need to stop puppies biting as soon as possible.

If a pup is left with its mum, then it would be her that would do the teaching - she would soon put an over excited pup in its place if it tried to bite her!  We do tend to take puppies away from their mums quite early, so they have not yet learnt this properly. We therefore need to take over mum’s job and get puppy to stop biting.

One good way of starting to overcome inappropriate biting is to make sure that your new pup is socialized with plenty of other dogs.  If a puppy does try and bite an older and wiser dog, he or she will soon be  ’told off’, and would very quickly learn that biting is not the way to behave.

The sooner you can begin to teach your puppy not to bite the better it is going to be.  One of the very first things to do is to ensure that you have bought some toys from your pet store that have been designed specifically for a puppies sharp little teeth. They do need to have something to chew on. If your puppy starts to chew on an item that does not belong to him then reprimand him, remove the object and give him one of his toys to chew on.

A puppy will instinctively use their teeth with almost everything, and with a little patience they can be taught not to bite.  There is nothing your puppy will dislike more than you saying no to him in your sternest voice.

Just remember to use the same stop command each time you need him to stop biting, to let him socialize with other dogs so he can learn from them, and most of all to be patient with him as he learns.
